A lot of professionals nowadays will not only have one main job. A lot of people are trying out the freelancing gig and it has proven to be a great industry for a lot of us. However, when do we ever stop to ask if we have the right attributes to become a great freelancer? The industry is of course saturated because a lot of people enjoy working from home. You will definitely need to stand out from the rest to ensure you get hired!
Anyone looking for a freelancer is now spoilt for choice because there are so many freelancers out there. So what do you need to do to make sure you are the number one choice for your potential clients?
Attribute 1 : A Well-Written Resume or CV
This is number one because it will show your clients exactly what you have done and what you are capable of. Resumes are always great to have and update often because you never know when you need it.
Resumes should have your current information, your education, your past experiences as well as your skillset. There are a lot of website that will teach you how to create a great resume. Always search the internet first before creating your resume. This way, you know what the latest trends are when it comes to resumes.
Ensure that you have good grammar as well because nothing will effect your freelance job opportunities more than bad grammar.
Attribute 2 : A Great Portfolio

This is your next step after you’ve created your killer resume. As a freelance accountant you will be able to put together some of your past work. It will also be great if you could also put together testimonials and reviews from your past clients. This increases credibility and trust in your future clients.
People would much rather trust someone’s work if it has been used by and vouched for by someone else.
Attribute 3 : Understanding & Empathy
This is a crucial soft skill that everyone who wants to be a freelancer should have. The reason being – you will not be working in the same office or be around them often. Therefore, being understanding and establishing that connection and empathy with them is extremely important so that you are also as invested in the project as they are or how you would be if you were working for them full time.
This is extremely important to ensure that you are on top of what the client wants and needs at all time. If you finish the project and they don’t like it, that would be a problem. This problem would have been avoided if you would have understood them from the start. You need to be able to understand your clients and their needs to be able to do your work best. You need to translate what your clients want in their head and to transform that into your work.
The more understanding and empathy you have, the better the work you produce for your clients.
Attribute 4 : Determination
Every job requires some form of determination. However, being a freelance requires this a bit more. To have a flourishing and great freelance career, this trait will take you to the top. You need to be willing to make certain necessary sacrifices early on to make sure you confirm your success. It will become tough, being a freelancer. You will need that determination to do whatever it takes to make sure that your work is done. A determined freelancer will be need to put in the required time, effort, money and energy into making sure their career takes off. It might take some time to get there, but always stay determined. Don’t give up too fast. A lot of freelancers never make it because they give up too fast. Don’t be one of those people. Take your time and also make sure that you give yourself the space and time to succeed.
Attribute 5 : Professionalism
Sometimes, one of the main reasons freelancers get a bad name is because they aren’t as professional as they should be. And this causes a lot of people to stay away from freelancers and this makes the entire industry look bad sometimes. To make sure you are professional, you need to never miss deadlines, you need to make sure your emails are written properly, you need to ensure that you’re dressed professionally. All these small things will allow you to be respected as a professional. Be it a freelancer or a CEO. You can command respect by making sure you are worthy to be respected. As a freelancer, you have multiple bosses who are your clients so you need to make sure they are all taken care of.
Being a freelancer does not mean you don’t have the normal responsibilities. It’s much more stressful because you need to handle multiple stakeholders. And they all have different personalities and attributes. Handling all of them are not easy. So keep them happy and your career with definitely flourish.
